🩸 Writing Challenge: Character Before Plot

The most memorable characters aren't perfect. They're full of contradictions, hidden fears, impossible choices, and motivations that shape every decision they make.

This challenge is all about creating a character readers will remember long after the story ends.

Now it's your turn! ✍️

Create a 300–500 word scene that introduces a character facing an ordinary situation.

There should be no monsters, murders, or supernatural events.

Instead, reveal who they are through their choices, reactions, habits, dialogue, and the little contradictions that make them feel real.

By the end of the scene, readers should understand what your character wants, what they're afraid of, or what they're trying to hide—without you ever stating it outright.

Your goal isn't to tell us about your character.

It's to let us meet them.

👇 Post your work below. If you'd like feedback, let everyone know what you'd like readers to focus on. And if you have time, take a look at someone else's work too—constructive feedback helps us all grow as writers.
