The most memorable horror doesn't always explain itself. Sometimes it's the ordinary object, the repeated image, or the sentence left unfinished that lingers longest in a reader's mind.

This challenge is all about adding meaning beneath the surface of your writing.

Write a 300–500 word horror scene featuring an ordinary object that carries a deeper meaning.

It could be:

🩸 A child's toy

🩸 A wedding ring

🩸 An old photograph

🩸 A key

🩸 A clock

🩸 A family heirloom

🩸 Or any everyday object that becomes unsettling through symbolism.

Rather than explaining its significance, let your readers uncover it through the character's actions, dialogue, and the atmosphere you create. Trust the subtext to do the work.
