🩸 Writing Challenge: Build the Pressure

Tension isn't created by constant action or endless danger. It's built through uncertainty, conflict, and the feeling that something is about to go wrong.

This challenge is all about making readers desperate to know what happens next.

Now it's your turn! ✍️

Write a 300–500 word horror scene where the tension builds from beginning to end—but nothing overtly terrifying actually happens.

Instead, use pacing, atmosphere, dialogue, setting, and your character's emotions to create a growing sense of unease.

Perhaps your character is waiting for someone to arrive.

Perhaps they're searching for something they shouldn't.

Perhaps they know something is wrong... they just can't prove it.

By the end of the scene, your reader should feel that something dreadful is inevitable—even if the horror itself hasn't yet appeared.

👇 Post your work below. If you'd like feedback, let everyone know what you'd like readers to focus on. And if you have time, take a look at someone else's work too—constructive feedback helps us all grow as writers.
