🩸 Writing Challenge: Atmosphere First

The setting isn't just where your story takes place—it's how your readers experience it.

The right atmosphere can make an ordinary room feel unsettling long before anything frightening happens.

This challenge is all about creating mood through your writing.

Now it's your turn! ✍️

Write a 300–500 word horror scene set in an ordinary location—a kitchen, school, woodland path, supermarket, library, or anywhere else that seems completely normal.

Your goal is to create an overwhelming sense of unease without introducing a monster, ghost, or supernatural event.

Rely on atmosphere alone. Use sensory details, pacing, lighting, sounds, smells, weather, and carefully chosen language to make the setting itself feel threatening.

By the end of the scene, your readers should feel that something is deeply wrong... even though they can't yet explain why.

👇 Post your work below. If you'd like feedback, let everyone know what you'd like readers to focus on. And if you have time, take a look at someone else's work too—constructive feedback helps us all grow as writers.
