🩸 Writing Challenge: Between Words
Some of the most powerful moments in fiction happen when a character's thoughts tell a completely different story from the words coming out of their mouth.
This challenge is all about creating tension through internal dialogue.
Now it's your turn! ✍️
Write a 300–500 word scene featuring a conversation between two characters.
On the surface, the dialogue should seem perfectly ordinary.
Beneath the surface, however, one character's internal thoughts should reveal a completely different reality. They might be hiding fear, resentment, guilt, suspicion, or a terrible secret—but none of it should be spoken aloud.

Now, here’s the fun part — once you’ve tried out these exercises, don’t keep that brilliance to yourself! Share your snippets, rough drafts, or even just your wildest internal monologues in the group.
Why? Because feedback is like caffeine for your writing brain — it jolts ideas awake, spots those sneaky inconsistencies, and helps you push your characters from good to unforgettable. Plus, seeing how others tackle internal dialogue can spark your own creativity in unexpected ways.
So, what’s the most surprising or hilarious thought your character’s hiding? Drop a line or two below, or post your exercise in the group for a quick peer review. Let’s get those inner voices shouting loud and clear — I’m ready to read!
