The Alcove
Sarah peeled back the plasterboard from the wall that had called to her since childhood. This was her mother’s house — her house now — and the oddly-shaped alcove in the master bedroom would be uncovered, birthing its treasure.
Jewels? Pirate riches? The inheritance of some long-lost aristocracy? When Sarah saw the glimpse of a wooden box beneath, her excitement grew. All those childlike imaginings chasing her through the bedroom like mother had.
Yet the wooden box wasn’t a chest. It offered no riches. Just a cold clarification of her girlish emptiness, wrapped in the broken promise of a tiny wooden casket.
