“Mischief Night”

Tommy quickly and quietly grabbed his sweater, scurrying to put it on.  He didn’t want to keep Sarah waiting.  He had been waiting for months to spend some time with her.  By now, she knew he had a crush on her, and he was starting to think she had a crush on him too.  Weeks of “yes, let’s do something soon” had led to this, Mischief Night.

The nicest part about any of this, though, was the fact that they would be the only two off the streets.  This was a part of town with a ton of teenagers, but this Mischief Night came equipped with rain and wind.  He even double confirmed with Sarah that she still wanted to go.  Zipping up his rain jacket, Tommy slipped downstairs.  He and Sarah were set to meet at 11:15.  Tommy had heard his parents' door click closed for the evening shortly before, so he wouldn’t have any trouble sneaking out. He was excited to see his crush.

Reaching the end of his block, the rain wasn’t as bad as he had thought it would be.  It was a little windy and certainly wet, but seeing Sarah wave at him from a distance and run towards him to give him a hug made Tommy’s worries go away.

Sarah motioned towards her bag.   “I’ve got a 32-pack of toilet paper and Mr. Castro’s address.  Ready to get back at him for making us fail that test?” She said, smiling playfully.

“You bet,” Tommy said, “And great to see you, Sarah!”

She smiled again, “I was thinking you weren’t coming when you didn't respond to my text!”

Confused, Tommy felt in his pocket for his phone.  “Shit.  I think I forgot it.  I was trying to be as quiet as possible, sneaking out.  You know my dad’s the sheriff.  I didn’t want him and Mom worrying with the Murky Falls Butcher escaping.”

Sarah giggled, “Yeah, I heard that too.  But he hasn’t been spotted or anything since he escaped, right?”, to which Tommy nodded.

The two got to work, quickly and quietly sending rolls of toilet paper over Mr. Castro’s house, trees, and bushes.  As they did, Tommy heard a police siren in the distance.

As they giggled and continued to deface their least favorite teacher’s house. Another giggle was heard behind them.  Turning around, they were greeted by the hooded grin of The Murky Falls butcher.

“Evenin Folks,” he laughed, as he raised his rusty axe.  He swung at the two without hesitation, to which Tommy pushed Sarah out of the way.  Grabbing her bag, he blocked the swing of the axe.  That 32-pack, now a 27-pack, saved their lives.  It gave them just enough time to run.

As they ran down the street, panicked, Police lights flared.  Tommy turned to see if they were followed.  To his surprise, the Butcher ran the other direction, away from the police.  “So uh,” she started, “want to see a movie tomorrow?”
